Algonquin College Hairstyling Green Event

63,180 lbs of hair clippings, 42,122 lbs of hair color, 109,512 lbs of foil and colour tubes, and 206,392 lbs of paper and plastic – that’s the amount of waste being tossed out by hair salons across North America EVERY SINGLE DAY; that’s a whopping total of 421,206 lbs!

In direct response to this growing challenge, Algonquin College Hairstyling programs have partnered with Green Circle Salons to invite all Ottawa salons to come together in a joint effort to keep Ottawa green and beautiful. Algonquin has more than 100 student stylists per year who have learned how to recycle and do their part to save our waste from making it to the landfills.

All Ottawa salons are challenged to save up one week’s worth of their hair clippings, aerosol cans, and chemical-laden foils, and bring them to the ‘Green Your Community” event at Sunday April 30th at Algonquin College Hair Salon Spa & Boutique at 1385 Woodrooffe Ave Building A. Green Circle Salons will collect the bags of hair and foils/metals, and take them away for recycling or repurposing. Green Circle will plant one tree for every attendee, and salons that sign up at the event to recycle with Green Circle will receive a free membership to the program.

At the event, Algonquin College Hairstyling staff and students will show salon owners and stylists how they’ve set up their recycling bins, and the impact it has made for them, in the hopes of getting every salon in Ottawa to become certified sustainable and keep our shared community beautiful and green.
